Atom Girls Host Visiting Normanby Girls

Atom Girls lose a tough one on Saturday to the visiting Normanby Girls

After a wee bit of a delay, the game began with a good Ice Dog chant to get the girls pumped up. The Normanby girls were a strong team, thanks in part to a couple of really tall and skilled girls who made a difference. Not to mention their goalie who seemed to be in top form, stopping a good number of solid rushes by our forwards...
Period 1 saw Maddie get things started quickly with her goal only a few seconds into the game, but it was quickly answered by Normanby only 1 minute later. All tied up, and then Maddie took a lovely pass from Taylor which quickly got us our 2nd goal and the lead. At the end of the 1st, Normanby got two quick goals which gave them the lead, 3-2.
Period 2 saw the girls giving everything they had against Normanby. We saw breakaways, a number of them, but each time their goalie was able to stop the shot. Normanby's breakaway gave them one more goal, 4-2. Joleen's solid work gave us a resulting goal making the game closer at 4-3. Unfortunately, Normanby scored with only 1 minute left, a blaster shot from the top of the circle, giving Normanby lots of cushion room for going into the third, 5-3.
The last period was a "tough one" because the Ice Dogs tried really hard: the breakaways, the good defence, the passing, the "go-to-it" attitude. But, it just wasn't working. Then, with the clock running out of time, the Normanby girls got two quick, lucky goals in the last 2 minutes to finish the game at 7-3.
All in all, a good game to watch with two teams who were (almost) evenly matched. The taller Normanby girls just had a little more reach than we did.
