The Dogs played some very exciting hockey on the weekend losing a nail biter to Milverton 2-1 Friday night, but bouncing back with a 4-2 victory against Elma Logan Saturday in Hensall.
Friday's game started off with Milverton coming out flying and the Dogs bunching up at times like a tyke game. Twenty six seconds into the game we found ourselves down 1-0 on a goal that didn't seem to cross the line entirely, but none the less was awarded to Milverton. A couple of quick penalties to the Dogs and all of a sudden it was 5 on 3 hockey for a little over a minute. Some big saves by Doug, and some good penalty killing and we walked away from the first period only down 1-0. Two minutes and eleven seconds into the second Milverton scored another and the Dogs were down by two. This is where the game seemed to change, the guys decided to start applying the "dump and chase" which we had emphazied all game. They soon found that they were getting to the puck first and in turn created many scoring chances but were held at bay by the Milverton goalie. Their efforts were finally rewarded on a two on one break, where Trey Lewis flipped the puck over to Jacob Govier whose one timer just got by the goalie high to the glove side. The Dogs then proceeded to dominate the third period, and with about 8:00 minutes left on the clock we pulled our goalie. Now our fans tthought we were out to lunch, but what they didn't know was that we had a curfew and actually only had about two minutes remaining. We controlled the whole two minutes in the Milverton end firing shots on the goalie but to no avail. The buzzer sounded with about five minutes left on the clock and the game was over. The one lesson that the boys did learn however is that the "dump and chase" did work and they were quick to apply it to the game on Saturday. We praised the efforts of the boys after the game, for not giving up and actually outplaying Milverton for the last part of the game. Secondly we told the boys to hold their heads high as we were proud of them and their efforts in the strides that they have made since the last game against Milverton an 8-0 loss.
Saturdays game was all "dump and chase" and some awesome passing by all the guys and what a difference a day makes. We were winning all the battles and controlled the play for the whole game, and I feel this was our best all around game all year. Elma Logan opened the scoring with 5:22 left in the first on a bad bounce but that's hockey. To that point the whole first period had pretty well been played in their end. The hard work finally paid of when Tom VanEsveld finally found the back of the net on a rebound from Trey's shot, that was nicely set up by Jared Daw. Two minutes into the second on some fine forechecking by Devin Parker, Tom took the turnover and quickly deposited into the net high to the glove side. The score remained 2-1 until the end of the second but could have been worse if not for some fine goaltending from the other team.A minute and forty two seconds and Trey found the back of the net on a miss by Devin, and a nice effort by Jacob to get the puck to the net. With a little over seven minutes to go Jeremy found the back of the net on nices passes from Tom and Bryce Mann who started the play from deep in our end. Elma Logan scored a late one on a bad faceoff in our end that I can even describe. Although not on the score sheet our DEFENCE need to be commended on this day as they shut down every play that seemed to cross our line. Carter Marriage easily played what I must say was his best game of the year, he made four nice hits, and really controlled the play every time he was around the puck. We are also reccommending soccer for the summer is a must Carter. Good weekend Dogs, see you at the rink.
