The Dogs travelled to Listowel on Saturday and earned a point in a hard fought 3-3 draw against the Cyclones. The Dogs were strong out of the gate and dominated the first half of the game, outshooting the Cyclones 21-10 through two periods of play. The Dogs were quick to find out though that you have to play the whole forty minutes.
The play for the first period and the majority of the second was in the Listowel's end where the Dogs fired many shots from the slotĀ on the goalie who made some very nice saves. Everyone was sticking to the game plan and were rewarded with some very good scoring chances. Listowel however scored the first goal of the game on the most exciting play in hockey, the Penalty Shot. A Listowel player got by our defence and in a last ditch effort to tie him up he was tripped calling for the penalty shot. Doug did everything he could but the puck just slid under his pad to give the home team the 1-0 lead with 8:41 remaining in the second. The Dogs however seemed to get a spark from this and immediately went back to work and were finally rewarded with a goal of there own with 6:06 left on the clock. It was a fine three way passing play with Devin Parker and Trey Lewis setting up Jacob Govier for his 4th goal of the season. Then with 1:40 remaining in the second Will Reinhardt pass up the boards to Devin Parker who then fed a streaking Tom Van Esveld up the middle for a breakaway, which resulted in Tom firing the puck past the goalie high to the glove side. The second period ended with the Dogs ahead 2-1. The third period started with the Dogs trying to work on protecting a lead and keeping our end clean. This seems to need a little more practice as the guys seemed to be running around too much which opened many lanes and the Cyclones peppered Doug with shots and finally with 7:09 left, they had managed to tie the score. Doug's fine effort though kept us in the game and we were ready to go back to the original game plan now. A bad bounce though with less than four minutes to go put the Cyclones ahead 3-2. Although the team got down for a bit we were able to get them motivated again, and with 1:53 remaining Devin Parker got his third assist of the game when he came back to pick up a loose puck. He passed it up to Dillan Gautreau who skated in across the Listowel blue line and sent a beautiful pass to Jacob Govier who was breaking up the wing. Jacob went in to beat the goalie high to the glove side once again for his second goal of the game. This seemed to pump the guys up and although the guys kept the puck in the Listowel end for the final minute, they were unable to score. I would once again like to commend the guys on their effort and great team work, as it is nice to watch them passing and skating together as one unit. I would also like to thank Jeremy and Josh for comingĀ and helping us out. see you guys Wednesday against Zurich, in Hensall.
