Twas the Night Before the Leafs Won the Stanley Cup

Twas the night before the Leafs won the Stanley Cup..
We were all old and gray, but we never gave up..
Our Jerseys were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that Lord Stanley soon would be there..The children were nestled snug in their chair
With visions of stardom and the Stanley Cup glare.
And mamma with her Leaf scarf, and I in my hat,
Had just settled back to watch the sports re-cap.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
Brian Burke joined the Leafs, but that didn`t matter
Away to the big screen I flew like a flash,
Punched the buttons on my remote and threw up the sash.
I couldn`t miss this day in all of its glory
That`s why I made up this incredible story
When, what to my wondering eyes appeared in the fog,
But a miniature sleigh, and 15 tiny ice dog.
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name
Now Dutchie! now Beckham, now Townie and Vetch!
On, Darth! On, Smitty!, and Pickle and Notch!
Rooster, Snoop, Hammer and Draggy,
Sinker, Gomer and of course there was Haggy.
To the top of the circle, at the end of the ice!
Now skate away! skate away! Scoring`s so nice!"
And then, in a twinkling, I saw on the screen
The prancing and pawing of the Leaf team.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
It was true, the Leafs were Stanley Cup bound.
I sprang up and cheered, to my team gave a whistle,
And away our arms flew like the down of a thistle.
And I heard the announcer exclaim that "believing is right",
"Even the Maple Leafs can have a good-night!
