Saturday Jan 21, the peewee local#1 Icedogs traveled to Harriston for their second tournament of the season.
First up was a morning match with the hometown canines—The Minto Mad Dogs. After a slow start, the Icedogs found themselves down 1-0. In the second period, Brenden V. tied the game on a terrific end- to-end rush. The game was a see saw battle to the buzzer with the score tied 2-2 (second goal also by Brenden V.). After 5 minutes of 4 on 4 overtime play, the score remained unchanged and the boys were off to a shootout. In the shootout, the ever- cool Carson “Hammer” slammed the door on all three Minto shooters. At the other end, Brendan V. found the back of the net AGAIN(yes, that's a hattie), to seal the win.
In the afternoon game, the Icedogs were up against the heavily favoured squad from Flesherton, but the Icedogs came out flying. Using speed and hard work, BCH controlled most of the game. After the first period, BCH led by 2 with goals from Sammy B (unassisted), and Alex C. (from Cory D. and Brendan V.) At the end of the second the lead was 4-0 after goals by Clay and Alex (both unassisted). Although the pace dropped off in the third (Flesherton would score 2 goals), the dawgs hung on to the lead... and were headed to the finals!
In the championship game the Icedogs faced off against The West Lincoln Wraths. The atmosphere in the arena was electric! In the first period, both teams had chances and both goalies made big saves. The Icedog defencemen won the battles for the puck, blocked shots and consistently cleared pucks and opposing players from in front of the net. The forwards won races to gain the puck, battled for possession and created chances in front of the Wrath goalie. However, after one period the score was 0-0.
In the second period, the team's hard work paid off and wingers Cory D. and Branden P. connected for 2 beautiful goals. However, West Lincoln didn’t get to the final by quitting and they stormed back to tie the game 2-2. After 5 minutes of 4 on 4 sudden death play that saw both goalies tested, the Icedogs found themselves in the second shootout of the tournament and the championship on the line. Clay S. was the first shooter for BCH and he stormed in on the West Lincoln goalie with a quick fake and roofed a back hander. At the other end Carson was slamming the door on the Wrath’s fist shooter. The second shooter for BCH was Brendan V. who had the most points for BCH in the tournament. He couldn’t quite control the puck on the shootout try and the Wrath goalie gathered it in. At the other end, Carson denied the second Wrath shooter. The final BCH shooter was Alex C. He carried the puck in hard on the goalie, put a little move on, and found a hole to the back of the net. At the other end, Carson rejected the final Wrath shooter and the celebration was on.
Assistant captain, Marty P. Accepted the championship trophy and Carson H. was named team MVP by the opposing coaches. Well done Ice dogs.
