The weekend of Jan 6-8 saw the Atom LL #1 travel to Delhi to compete in Delhi Rockets annual Local League tournament. The team knew this would be a challenging tournament as they had not played any of their competition before. This did not stop the Icedogs from being crowned tournament champions when the dust settled. An excellent all around team effort made this all possible. The road to the championship began with a match against the Mt Brydges Cougars. As was excepted the Cougars proved a big challenge. BCH opened the scoring as Ethan M dented the twine with an assist by Mac S. The game would remain 1-0 until the final seconds of period 2 when Mt Brydges knotted the game 1-1. Early in the third the Cougars scored to go up 2-1. Not to be out done BCH's Caleb D pushed one in with help from Ethan M. On his very next shift Caleb D scored his second of the game unassisted. Then one of nicest goals of the tournament as defenseman Kyle D went coast to coast to deposit one in the Cougars net with Caleb D assisting. Caleb D added some insurance to make the final score 5-2 Icedogs. With the victory BCH took 4 points out of the game. MVP for the game was Ethan M.
After a few hours rest the Icedogs where back on the ice facing the hometown Delhi(2) Rockets. BCH was able to silence the crowd with an early goal by Caleb D with help from Tayler M. The first period ended 1-0 in BCH's favour. The game remained tight until Caleb D was able to turn the red light on, after taking a great breakaway feed from Brodie G. Delhi would make a game of it with two third period goals sandwiched around Caleb D's hat trick goal with an assist from Mitchell D. Delhi would pull out all the stops in an effort to tie the game but the defence and Kai stood tall to preserve the 3-2 victory and another 4 points to end day 1 with 8 points. MVP for the game was Caleb D.
A busy Sunday began with a tilt against the Simcoe Warriors, this game would determine who would win the pool. As past games this was very evenly matched game with Simcoe finally able break the scoreless dual to lead 1-0 after 1 period. The second period went back and forth and no one was able to beat these two great goalies. The strong battle continued for most of period 3 until Simcoe score a shorthanded goal to take a 2-0 lead. With a last dash effort and Kai on the bench for an extra attacker Caleb D brought BCH within one goal. They pulled out all the stops to tie the game up but ran out of time. The game ended 2-1 for Simcoe. With the victory Simcoe came out first in the pool and BCH claimed 2nd place. Kai E took home MVP honours in this game
The Semi- Final game saw the Icedogs taking on a strong Dorchester Dragons team. As Dorchester had won their pool the Dogs were in for a tough game. As expected Dorchester was everything and more than BCH expected. The teams remained scoreless after 1 period. BCH would break the ice on a wrap around goal from Caleb D. The rest of the the second period and the third period was played at a high tempo as the Dragons pressed for the equalizer and BCH tried to add some insurance. Due to great goaltending and defensive play by both teams no one was able to find the back of the net and BCH pulled out a hard fought well deserved 1-0 victory and punched their ticket to the finals. Both teams should be congratulated for an awesome played game, that caused a few more grey hairs on everyone's head. The game MVP was awarded to Kyle D
The Dogs would have a few hours off to rest up for the finals and find out who there competition would be. After the second semi - final BCH learned they would get a chance at revenge on the only team to best them in the tournament Simcoe.
With everyone sitting in the proper spot in the room according to coach Scott and their lucky blue jerseys on they readied for a battle. The team looked confident entering the big game. After a pre game talk from coach Jeff the Dogs took to ice in quest of a championship. This game lived up to it's billing and both teams battled hard for every inch of ice. The first stanza ended at 0-0, with both goalies bringing their "A "game. As in the previous match Simcoe jumped out on top 1-0, before Caleb D jumped on a juicy rebound off a blast from the point by Kyle D. The championship would be decided in the final period. The teams once again went end to end trying to gain an advantage but the game remained deadlocked 1-1. Simcoe was finally able to break thru and sneak one by Kai for a 2-1 lead. This seemed to light a fire under BCH as a little over a minute later Tayler M found Caleb D in front of the Simcoe net and Caleb D knotted the game. The next two minutes kept everyone in the arena on the edge of their seats. The final 2 minutes settled nothing, so it was off to overtime. As if that was not too much for everyones heart to take, these two evenly matched teams battled thru a 5 minute overtime period with nothing decided. With all defibrillators on standby the Dogs decide this had went on long enough and the line of Ethan M, Liam S, Caleb D and Brodie G and Kyle D on the back end pinned the Warriors in their end. This led to Caleb D feeding Ethan M and the BCH fans and players erupted in celebration as they were crowned 2012 DELHI ATOM LL "A" CHAMPIONS. The Game MVP was presented to Caleb D.
